What is the purpose of the UEHP?


The purpose of the UEHP is to defend and represent the independent hospitals in Europe, to generate the political and economic conditions aiming to improve the independent initiative in the health field. Moreover UEHP studies and creates better conditions for the smooth management of independent hospitals. The priority of the UEHP is to promote high quality healthcare focused on the patient. The UEHP has as its objectives all matters related to the EU and particularly:

 

  • The study and creation of the best conditions for the management of private care specific to the E.U.
  • To co-ordinate initiatives for the free establishment of independent healthcare facilities in the Common Market, as well as the promotion of the internal market in the field of healthcare;
  • The study of conditions for participation of independent hospitals in the social hospital service in the countries of the European Union
  • Representation of independent hospitals in the European Union.

The role of private hospitals in Europe

The private sector already represents a substantial percentage of care within the European Union with 24% of short-stay beds. All over Europe, private hospital beds increased more than 5% in the last decade (data WHO/Europe, European HFA Database, August 2009), while public hospital beds declined at least by 10%.
