Tariffs for private hospitals unchanged since 2011

One third of hospital admissions are covered by private insurance, but rates have remained unchanged for too long.’ This was stated by Prof. Gabriele Pelissero, National President of the Italian Association of Private Hospitals (AIOP), during the programme ‘L’Aria che tira’ broadcast on La7.

AIOP represents the private law component of the National Health Service (SSN), but 95% of the activity carried out by our facilities is public in nature. We operate on behalf of the SSN, following the same rules and tariffs established by it. This represents a serious problem, as we work with remuneration levels that have remained unchanged since 2011. In a context in which everything in Italy, from energy to coffee, has increased in price, our rates have remained unchanged for almost 15 years. This situation inevitably affects all operators in the sector, including doctors, who are directly affected. The shortage of doctors is not only caused by an economic problem, but the economic aspect is certainly very relevant and affects the entire National Health Service, understood as a mixed system in which two components coexist, operating under the same rules and guaranteeing the same services‘.
