A recent evaluation by the German Pension Insurance (DRV) shows that investments in rehabilitation not only increase individuals’ chances of returning to work, but also have measurable macroeconomic effects. According to the calculations, every euro invested generates a macroeconomic benefit of two to three euros in the first year alone. After two years, this figure rises to around five euros.
Rehabilitation services are a key component in maintaining the workforce and thus a significant factor in economic stability. The current calculations make it clear that an investment of around £8 billion in rehabilitation today can generate a total economic benefit of around £40 billion within the first two years. Medical and vocational rehabilitation therefore remains a highly effective instrument for ensuring participation in working life, not only from a social policy perspective but also from an economic perspective.
