Sustainable procurement, CAHPP’s green index for manufacturers

CAHPP, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2022, has been an associate member of UEHP for many years.

Created in 2012, the Green Index evaluates the sustainable development strategy of CAHPP’s referenced suppliers every year on a contractual basis and based on evidence. Depending on the results, CAHPP awards, or not, the Green Index (A, A+, A++ or B rating).

The Green Index aims at a continuous improvement of the referenced suppliers’ offer. Thanks to its Green Index, CAHPP measures, evaluates and identifies the “responsible purchasing” policy of its suppliers as soon as they are included in the portfolio. A follow-up allows to maintain the level of requirement and to promote a continuous improvement of the suppliers’ results. Ultimately, the Green Index meets the quality, safety and carbon neutrality requirements of client organisations.

Participation in the evaluation is divided into 4 phases: registration, data collection or updating, analysis using algorithms and manual data communication, and communication of the results. The results are accompanied by a recommended action sheet.

The method covers 13 sectors of activity: biomedical, hygiene and disinfection, biomedical and technical services, medical devices, implantable medical devices, service provision, pharmacy, disability, commissary, ligature, human resources, equipment and catering, and identifies 6 themes:

– Management commitment (strategy, policy and follow-up),
– purchasing policy (description and justification of environmental, health and social criteria)
– products and eco-design (full life cycle analysis),
– reduction of impacts on customer sites (encouragement and monitoring),
– waste management (reduction, recycling and treatment channels),
– orders and distribution (optimisation of order flows, logistics and dematerialisation).

In 2022, CAHPP recorded an increase in the commitment and an improvement in the results of all manufacturers. Thus, 299 suppliers and service providers have been evaluated. These are encouraging signs for the objective announced for 2025: a Green Index label for 100% of suppliers.

“Our responsibility as a major player in healthcare purchasing is, on the one hand, to involve all manufacturers in a CSR policy and, on the other, to support healthcare establishments in this approach, particularly via the CAHPP grant. This commitment over the past 10 years, through a highly structured evaluation system, is bearing fruit. Not forgetting that since 2009, CAHPP has been imposing these principles on itself”, shares Christophe Sadoine, Chairman and CEO of CAHPP.
