The European Commission published on 19 April the data on cross-border patient healthcare following the Directive 2011/24/EU for the reference year 2022.
The main findings of the report are:
- the increase of number of countries implementing a system of prior notification (10 in 2022 compared to 9 in 2021)
- 19 countries out of twenty-eight have a system for prior authorization in place
- the 83.5% of the requests for cross border health care under the Directive was granted
- Patient mobility is mostly involving neighboring countries
Despite a general improvement in the use of this Directive, its impact remains quite modest and the awareness of the possibility to use this legislative instrument to seek planned healthcare throughout Europe stays very low, both on the citizens’ and the healthcare professionals sides’.
