The healthcare establishment which won this year’s first prize in the European Private Hospitalization Awards in this category is:
CUF Hospital Lisbon, Portugal
for its 3D reconstruction of the patient’s anatomy to help surgeons plan complex surgeries
The number of complex surgeries has been increasing over the years, heightening the need to have representative 3D models of the organ and/or tumour to be operated on as an advantage for more detailed and complete surgical planning.
In this sense, CUF’s Innovation Team and a Clinical Team from Hospital CUF Descobertas embarked on a collaborative effort to explore the possibility of testing a new solution in the market, built by Cella Medical. This innovation enables surgeons to plan complex surgeries through a 3D reconstruction model of the patient’s anatomy, that incorporates specific functionalities and surgical simulation tools for complex surgeries. The models are created from the patient’s image diagnosis (MRI, CT, PET or combination of these) by specialised imaging technicians and radiologists, applying advanced medical image processing methods. This solution was initially tested in the specialties of urology and general surgery, empowering surgeons to better define the approach they were going to use in less time. With Cella’s solutions, surgeons are able to view the organ from different angles, confirm the location of the most important structures, such as the patient’s blood vessels and nerves, as well as, in the case of tumours, where they are located and which noble structures they affect. This advanced preparation and decision-making process regarding the surgical approach are much better, contributes to better clinical results and substantially lowers the associated risks, elevating the clinical safety of the patient.
