EPHA 2025 – Viamed Salud – Spain

European Private Hospital Awards (EPHA) 2025

The winner in the category: Sustainable and Green Practices in Hospitals

The “Plan EVIAMED30” at Viamed San Jose Hospital, Alcantarilla, Murcia, produces sustainable hydrogen and >99.5% medical oxygen via electrolysis, featuring the Iberian Peninsula’s first 100% hydrogen boiler. It reduces CO2 emissions, ensures self-sufficiency with solar-powered, modular systems, and complies with strict regulations, enhancing healthcare efficiency and sustainability.

  • What makes your project so special?
Our green hydrogen plant at Viamed San José represents a decisive step forward in our commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability, and energy efficiency. As our CEO, Paulo Gonçalves, stated at the inauguration, this project reflects our determination not only to care for the health of our patients, but also to reaffirm our responsibility to the environment and contribute to a healthier world for future generations.
What makes this project truly special is its dual impact: it significantly improves our energy efficiency while ensuring the safe, reliable production of clean oxygen as a pharmaceutical gas. By integrating pioneering technology into a hospital setting, we are demonstrating that healthcare providers can lead the way in decarbonisation and sustainable innovation.
  • What does this award mean to you and your teams?
Winning the European Private Hospital Award for Sustainable and Green Practices is an extraordinary recognition for all of us at Viamed. It validates years of collaborative work, vision, and determination to transform sustainability from an aspiration into a tangible reality within our hospitals. For our teams, this award is a source of immense pride: it highlights their commitment, their capacity to innovate, and their belief that sustainability is inseparable from quality healthcare.
This distinction also reinforces our motivation to continue investing in technologies and practices that reduce our environmental impact and enhance the wellbeing of our patients. Above all, it inspires us to keep leading the way toward a greener, more responsible future in healthcare.

The project

The “Plan EVIAMED30” initiative at Viamed San Jose Hospital adopts eco-friendly technologies by producing green hydrogen and medical-grade oxygen via electrolysis, powered by 289 photovoltaic panels, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The use of a 100% hydrogen boiler, a clean energy alternative to natural gas boilers, further minimizes environmental impact by eliminating CO2 emissions from traditional heating methods. These sustainable systems promote eco-friendly energy production without relying on recycled materials but focus on renewable resources and clean technologies.

Objectives:

The “Plan EVIAMED30” at Viamed San Jose Hospital introduces a novel environmental protection technique by producing green hydrogen and high-purity medical oxygen (>99.5%) on-site via electrolysis, powered by 289 photovoltaic panels. It features the first 100% hydrogen-powered boiler in the Iberian Peninsula, reducing CO2 emissions and reliance on fossil fuels compared to traditional natural gas boilers. This sustainable approach minimizes the carbon footprint from oxygen transport and enhances waste reduction by enabling self-sufficient, clean energy-driven medical oxygen production, compliant with strict regulations like UNE-EN ISO 7396.

Expected Results:
The “Plan EVIAMED30” minimizes environmental impact by eliminating CO2 emissions from traditional heating methods. These sustainable systems promote eco-friendly energy production without relying on recycled materials but focus on renewable resources and clean technologies.
