EPHA awards 2022 – Best prevention initiative

1st price, the Recoletas Group, Spain, for its holistic obesity 360° omnichannel care programme

The award recognises Recoletas’ commitment to curbing obesity in Castilla y León, where there are many overweight and obese people and where the rates of these pathologies among children are alarming. The Recoletas Group is the largest private health services company in Castilla y León.

Almost a year ago Recoletas opened an Obesity Unit at the Recoletas Campo Grande Hospital in Valladolid with the sole purpose of helping people with obesity to lose weight effectively and safely and to prevent them from many of the consequences that this pathology has on their health: chronic diseases, diabetes, arterial hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, some types of cancer and even self-esteem problems.

In January this year, a second Obesity Unit came into operation at the Recoletas Hospital in Segovia, also to promote healthy eating habits and lifestyles among people with overweight problems.

Both obesity units have multidisciplinary medical teams of expert bariatric surgeons, endoscopists, endocrinologists, family doctors, nutritionists and psychologists who adapt the treatments to the needs of each patient (they can be medical, endoscopic or surgical treatments) and are also responsible for accompanying them throughout the process with the aim of always achieving the expected results.

Activities to raise awareness in society

At the same time, with the aim of raising awareness of the need to act against the high rates of obesity that are increasing every year in Castilla y León, Recoletas Red Hospitalaria has set up other activities in Valladolid and Segovia, as well as in the other cities where it is also operating: information campaigns in the media and social networks, debate forums, conferences in schools, healthy cooking demonstrations open to the public, etc.

Belén Gallegos, Director of the Recoletas Campo Grande Hospital, stresses that for the company, this European recognition is not only excellent news, but also a way of highlighting the company’s work and efforts to contribute to solving our society’s health problems, as well as an additional incentive to continue working and collaborating in all the necessary ways so that more and more people are aware of the importance of taking care of their health and preventing the development of diseases. Obesity and overweight are problems that affect us all and their solution requires joint, coordinated and committed work.
