More than 200 million people across 13 Member States were exposed to temperature above 35°C for consecutive days so far this year.
This is according to preliminary figures from the European Climate and Health Observatory, which they presented to the Health Security Committee (HSC) on 8 July.
Heat and health were at the top of today’s HSC agenda, given the impact of soaring temperatures on public health.
Member States exchanged experiences from the heatwaves in recent weeks and considered lessons that could support better preparedness across the continent.
As heatwaves become an increasingly regular occurrence rather than isolated events, the HSC discussed strengthening coordination between countries, learning from each other and treating extreme heat as a seasonal public health risk. The HSC will continue to work on heat waves over the next weeks, encouraging countries to take short-term and consider longer-term measures.
