The Portuguese Association of Private Hospitals (APHP) challenged the professionals of its 129 private hospitals to portray what hospital activity is all about, and the competition turned out to be absolutely amazing. The number of submitted photos exceeded all expectations and revealed images depicting moments of profound humanism, some of which were captured during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The photo of the winner, Diogo Nóbrega, who works at the Terra Quente hospital in Mirandela, is entitled “In Sickness and in Health” and depicts the tenderness of a hospitalised couple in side by side beds.

“The fact that this photograph won the Portuguese Private Hospital Association (APHP) Photography Competition has a very special meaning for all the professionals who had the opportunity to spend time with the couple. It will be eternalised in our memories that love is an unbreakable bond in sickness and in health,” says Diogo Nóbrega.

In second place was Samanta Henriques da Silva, from Hospital Lusíadas – Lisbon, with her photograph “Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty”. Third place went to Celso Pires Ribeiro, from Hospital da Luz – Setúbal, with the photograph “Being Luz (Light) in caring!”

“We launched the APHP photography competition with the goals of encouraging artistic expression relating to the hospital environment, fostering and recognising the creativity of private hospital professionals who are passionate about photography and spreading the word about the 46th World Hospital Congress being held in Portugal. We met all our objectives, we were delighted to receive dozens of photographs of great quality and sensitivity and it is very gratifying for us to witness how health professionals from private hospitals live their profession so intensely, participate in the life of the organisations and, above all, focus on the humanisation of care,” explains Oscar Gaspar, president of the APHP.

The 10 finalist photographs were proudly exhibited at the 46th World Hospital Congress, in Lisbon.
