The Apply AI Strategy aims to support the adoption of AI in strategic sectors, encouraging companies to embrace AI while considering the risks through an AI First Policy.
The strategic sectors identified in the Apply AI Strategy are:
- healthcare and pharma
- mobility, transport and automotive
- robotics
- manufacturing, engineering and construction
- agrifood
- climate and environment
- electronic communications
- defense, security and space
- energy
- public sector
- cultural and creative sectors, and media
To support the AI First Policy in the healthcare sector, the Commission will establish European AI-powered advanced screening centers (Q2 2027). The network of these AI-powered centers will facilitate access to high-quality datasets building on the European Health Data Space as well as the European digital infrastructures for the cancer imaging (European Federation for Cancer Images (EUCAIM)) and genomic data (B1MGplus Project). The Commission will also establish a European Network of Expertise on AI Deployment in Healthcare (Q4 2027) to consolidate guidelines and best practices.
To support AI adoption in medicine development, the Commission will launch an AI drug discovery challenge (Q4 2026) for potential new drugs to address unmet medical needs, and propose appropriate actions to streamline and enable quicker market entry of medical devices without compromising safety (2026).
