European Union of Private Hospitals

UEHP welcomes 2 new members

Welcome to the Irish Private Hospitals Association, a national network of 20 private hospitals, organised into 8 hospital groups.

A few facts:

  • Care for about 1 million patients annually (Ireland has a population of 5 million)
  • Carry out over 300,000 surgical procedures annually including over half of all spinal and cardiac surgeries
  • Provide 1 in every 5 beds in the country
  • 750,000 bed nights to the Irish healthcare system each year
  • 9,500 highly-trained healthcare professionals across the country
  • Fully accredited by internationally recognised accreditation bodies
  • Growing organisation, which also includes private hospitals from Northern Ireland
  • Further consolidation of private hospitals groups is underway

We are delighted to join UEHP as we believe that we are stronger together. Learning from each other, sharing knowledge and being more united is good for everyone.” Jim Daly, CEOI

“Our missions include collaborating and advocating for the future, increasing the recognition and influence of private healthcare, helping the population to get safe, timely and high-quality healthcare.

Private hospitals in Ireland provide care to patients covered by private insurance (95 % of revenues – 3 major private insurance companies) but they also have a strategic partnership with the Irish Department of Health (DOH) and the Health Service Executive (HSE), which provides public health and social care services to all Irish people (3.5 % of the capacity of private hospitals).

We don’t need the HSE from a commercial point of view, but we want to play a role in shaping our healthcare system. Members from private hospitals sit on a number of working groups (quality, safety, etc.). We also have waiting lists for privately insured patients, which is a new phenomenon in Ireland. We would like to have a long-term collaboration with the public sector, as the capacity deficit in the public system is quite acute.” Jim Daly, CEOI

Welcome to ASPKS, the Association of Private Hospitals in Kosovo

“It is a great chance for our young association created in 2020 to connect with other private hospitals associations in Europe to exchange and share experiences and to receive the support we need to develop more quickly and effectively.” Armend Vokshi, General Secretary of ASPKS

Some facts:

  • Kosovo is a young country (declaration of independence in 2008) with 1,9 million inhabitants
  • Healthcare institutions are undergoing far-reaching reforms aimed at providing decentralised services and covering all residents of the community
  • A national health fund is due to be set up by 2030
  • High demand for private health services among the population
  • Private hospital revenue comes from private insurance companies, with whom we have cooperation agreements and direct payments

Private and public-private partnerships:

  • 84 operation theaters
  • 3,287 beds
  • 43,000 surgical operations
  • 798 doctors
  • 2,100 other medical staff

“The 30 private hospitals that comprise ASPKS are “united as one!”, which is our motto. Our mission is to contribute in a proactive way to the development of healthcare in Kosovo by building on our strengths and encouraging close cooperation between the private and public healthcare sectors. The public health sector in Kosovo is itself in a development phase. We believe that looking to other European countries for inspiration and expertise is a unique opportunity to build a high-performing healthcare system and deliver quality services to our population.” Armend Agani, Chairman of the Board of ASPKS
