UEHP selected for the Health Cybersecurity Advisory Board
The European Commission, through DG CONNECT and DG SANTE, launched in January 2025 the European Action Plan on Cybersecurity for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers.
AI in Health: what are we waiting for?
The European Commission has published the final report of the study Deployment of AI in Healthcare, prepared by PwC EU Services and Open Evidence. The study confirms that Artificial Intelligence has the potential to transform European healthcare systems by improving efficiency, reducing administrative burdens, freeing up time to care for patients, strengthening diagnosis and treatment, but also stresses that deployment remains limited and uneven across Member States.

The fourth edition of the European Private Hospital Awards, promoted by the European Union of Private Hospitals (UEHP) and the Spanish Private Healthcare Alliance (ASPE), received 88 applications from 10 European countries.

Workforce Shortage is Top Concern for Private Healthcare Providers
The vast majority of Europe’s private hospitals are capable and willing to play a greater role in public health issues, particularly in prevention and patient screening. The shortage of healthcare professionals is seen as the main obstacle to the sector’s activity. These are some of the key findings of a survey conducted by the European Union of Private Hospitals, which involved participation from 13 countries*.

New UEHP leadership
Last 31 January, the European Union of Private Hospitals (UEHP) held its elective general assembly in Paris, kindly hosted by the French Association of Private Hospitals (FHP).
Mr Oscar Gaspar was unanimously elected as the new President of the European Union of Private Hospitals for a mandate of two years.
Open letter to Health Commissioner Várhelyi
UEHP, together with other 41 associations representing civil society, patients and health professionals, supported by 5 MEPs from the two largest political groups in the European Parliament (EPP and S&D), addressed an open letter to the newly elected European Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, Olivér Várhelyi.

Private hospitals in France on total strike from 3 June
At an extraordinary executive committee meeting this morning, the French Federation of Private Hospitals (Fédération de l’Hospitalisation Privée – FHP), together with all the unions representing liberal practitioners, decided to respond to the profound shock induced by the government’s recent announcement regarding hospital pricing for 2024, by announcing a total strike from 3 June (except for vital activities such as dialysis).

Inflation in the healthcare sector requires urgent common European action
During the COVID-19 crisis, European hospitals faced major difficulties related to procurement and labour recruitment shortages. But inflation is now weakening all efforts to deliver health services in facilities. Month after month, Eurostat reports rising prices for goods and services. Annual inflation in the Eurozone is up to 9.1%, with many countries facing double-digit inflation.
European Health Union: A new EU approach on cancer detection – screening more and screening better
Last 20 September, the Health Commissioner, Mrs Kyriakides, presented a couple of days ago a new approach to support Member States increasing the uptake of cancer screening, as part of the EU Cancer Screening Scheme to be put forward under Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.
Health changes in Portugal
In Portugal the month of August ended with the resignation of the Health Minister. Problems and failure to provide care in public hospitals filled the headlines and called for change.
The Portuguese health system had already no guaranteed sustainability, according to what OECD and the European Commission said at the end of 2019.

The 1st edition of the European Private Hospital Awards (EPHA) organised by UEHP – The European Union of Private Hospitals and APHP – The Portuguese Association of Private Hospitals, in partnership with EY, took place last Thursday, at Páteo da Galé, in Lisbon.
1st edition of the European Private Hospital Awards has close to 70 candidates
Under the High Patronage of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, the first edition of the European Private Hospital Awards, promoted by the European Union of Private Hospitals (UEHP) and the Portuguese Association of Private Hospitals (APHP), received 67 applications from 10 European countries. The winners will be announced on 23 June, in Lisbon, at Pateo da Galé.

World Health Day 2021

We excel in times of crisis
It seems that Jean Monnet’s prophecy continues to be true: “Europe will be forged in crises and will be the sum of the solutions adopted for those crises“. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic threw Europe – all of Europe and, indeed, the whole world – into the worst health crisis of the last 100 years, with many social and economic consequences.
European solidarity facing Cancer, the iron curtain remains closed

Introduction
Europe shares the same vision when it comes to Health: create conditions for equal terms of good health among the whole European population. But can we really talk of a united Europe when it comes to cancer? We need solidarity to fight Cancer in Europe but is it possible to integrate solidarity in the fight against cancer? Many efforts have been made and clear objectives have been put forward to develop cooperative projects to limit cancer incidence and to improve European citizen wellbeing.
The third wave in Portugal
The current pandemic situation in Portugal is extremely serious, with the count of new cases increasing exponentially since mid-December. The successive days with more than 10,000 daily new infections (more than 1,000 per million inhabitants) and the increasing number of hospitalized and ICU patients are, in addition to the number of deaths, the facts that lead to the conclusion that this third Covid wave is affecting Portugal dramatically.

Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union
On 1st January 2021 Portugal took over the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
With the motto ‘Time to deliver: a fair, green and digital recovery’, Portugal takes over this Presidency with three major priorities for the EU:
- To promote a recovery leveraged by the climate and digital transitions;
- To implement the European Pillar of Social Rights of the European Union as a distinctive element for ensuring a fair and inclusive climate and digital transition;
- To strengthen Europe’s autonomy whilst remaining open to the world, taking a leading role in climate action and promoting a digital transformation in the service of people.

The EU Health Coalition calls for an ambitious EU4HEALTH programme for Europe to take the lead in healthcare
COVID-19 has exacerbated many of the existing, underlying problems of healthcare systems. At the same time, it has highlighted the devastating impact that serious public health threats can have on both the health and wellbeing of our citizens as well as on our economies. The current crisis has clearly demonstrated how healthy populations and economic growth are interdependent and mutually reinforcing.
