As reported by Statista and published by the European Environment Agency, 2023 was the hottest year on record and the trend is worsening. We all know these facts, but the impact on human health is largely underestimated. Both in terms of our own health and well-being indicators as well as the environment, not to mention the risks of the resulting social imbalances.
With the European elections approaching, this issue, which affects our quality of life, cannot be left out of the debate. Europe is the continent most affected by this climate destabilisation. All the responsible players must address this issue, because we cannot neglect its impact on health. All our national federations are making the transition to “Green Hospitals”, even if funding is notoriously inadequate.
As healthcare professionals, we are concerned because these extreme weather conditions have a direct impact on the health of the patients we care for and the actions of our private hospitals deserve consideration and support. Every year, our European Private Hospital Awards initiative recognises responsible and sustainable achievements, best practices which deserve to be known and acknowledged. Health policy must be clear and coherent: Europe is at the forefront of this issue, and the convergence of ONE HEALTH must be achieved with all the professionals involved. Our health and that of future generations depends on it.
European policy must take on this transition, protecting our economic and social models while imposing a revolution in behaviour and making everyone more responsible. Support for environmentally-friendly investment strategies is essential, in consultation with all the Member States.
A green light for green and sustainable hospitals!
