From 1 January 2024 Belgium will take over the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union, under the motto “A Europe that cares, prepares and protects”.
European Health Union: A new EU approach on cancer detection – screening more and screening better
Last 20 September, the Health Commissioner, Mrs Kyriakides, presented a couple of days ago a new approach to support Member States increasing the uptake of cancer screening, as part of the EU Cancer Screening Scheme to be put forward under Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.

Public consultation on the revision of the EU’s pharmaceutical legislation
The European Commission has published a public consultation on the revision of the EU’s pharmaceutical legislation.
This public consultation aims to collect views of stakeholders and the general public in order to support the evaluation of the existing general pharmaceutical legislation on medicines for human use, and the impact assessment of its revision to ensure a future-proof and crisis-resistant medicines regulatory system.
Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union
On 1st January 2021 Portugal took over the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
With the motto ‘Time to deliver: a fair, green and digital recovery’, Portugal takes over this Presidency with three major priorities for the EU:
- To promote a recovery leveraged by the climate and digital transitions;
- To implement the European Pillar of Social Rights of the European Union as a distinctive element for ensuring a fair and inclusive climate and digital transition;
- To strengthen Europe’s autonomy whilst remaining open to the world, taking a leading role in climate action and promoting a digital transformation in the service of people.

Croatia accepts ePrescriptions prescribed in Finland
From 17 June, Croatia accepts ePrescriptions from Finland: Finnish citizens can now travel to Croatia and retrieve their medicines in the pharmacies thanks to “My health @European Union”, the electronic cross-border health services in Europe.

On 30 April, the European Commission published the paper “Proposed Guiding Principles for Reimbursement of Digital Health Products and Solutions” as one of four working papers developed collaboratively by members of the eHealth Stakeholder Group (eHSG), the EC’s expert group on European digital health policy.
UEHP is member of the eHealth Stakeholder Group (eHSG) and actively contributed to the drafting of this document together with other European stakeholders such as MedTech Europe (leader), COCIR, the European Society of Cardiology, the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU).
The European Parliament adopts the Directive on work-life balance for parents and carers
On 4 April, the European Parliament plenary adopted a new proposed Directive on work-life balance for parents and carers, which will repeal of the existing Framework Agreement on Parental Leave, made binding by Council Directive 2010/18/EU (the Parental Leave Directive).

Yesterday, 19 April, the European Parliament adopted an important non-binding resolution on vaccine hesitancy and the drop of vaccination rates in Europe, during the plenary session in Strasbourg.
Warning public confidence in vaccination is a major challenge that is already affecting health, Parliament said on Thursday.
